Do recruiting videos always have to be funny?
The reason why companies commission film productions is not always for the fun of it. After all, films are expensive and when the decision is made to invest in moving images, there is usually an underlying problem that only a film can solve efficiently. At the moment, it feels like all companies have one problem in common: the unsuccessful search for staff. Recruiting film is the keyword!
The right personnel
In order to attract the right specialists, recruiting campaigns provide an insight into the day-to-day work of the workforce. Depending on the corporate culture, the films do not always have to be informative and serious. We believe that funny or even crazy concepts are the means to an end in this genre. Because if the future employees feel entertained by our film, they create an emotional bond with the potential employer and the decision to apply is easier. But we don’t want to attract just anyone, we want to attract the right applicants for the job! So the recruiting campaign must be adapted to the language of the respective target group.
To speak the language of the target group
Very few people like working in a company that only defines itself by maximizing profits and creating a productive working environment. Employees have understood that working time is also life time. That’s why we want to show the interpersonal side of a company in our recruitment films. We show that you can have fun at work and that your colleagues are really nice. We also show the challenges of the company and where there is still room for improvement. It’s about honest insights behind the scenes of everyday working life!
Recruiting videos for Intersport
As part of a large-scale recruitment campaign, we were asked to produce three videos for the sports retailer. Our task was to appeal to future apprentices who have an affinity for sport and a lively attitude – and that also applies on the job. Adrian, who is completing an apprenticeship as a retail salesman, is definitely a top apprentice for Intersport:
Careers at Intersport – long-term thinking
Intersport is an important employer for the industrial location of Wels. Across Austria, 3600 employees work for the brand. As of March 2024, 42 vacancies are advertised on the career platform – from workshop employees to legal assistants and e-commerce apprenticeships. Intersport is a large company with many different professional groups, where there is something for almost every interest and accordingly, there is a constant search.
Intersport does a lot to actively appeal to people who have a fundamental enthusiasm for a sporty lifestyle, because their private interest translates well into job satisfaction.
Would it make sense to interview the managing director here, who communicates the requirements for his employees in a serious and informative manner? Certainly not! Relaxed and humorous is definitely the right approach for the Intersport employer films.
Craftsmen wanted!
There is a shortage of staff, especially in the skilled trades, and the few skilled workers are in hot demand. Perwein has no problem with this, as the Pongau-based company has been attaching great importance to a strong brand image for years. In addition to apprentice videos for the very young, there is also a strong focus on Apprenticeship+ for the older generation. In the example video, you can see that older career starters also enjoy working where things are not so bitterly serious:
High pressure on employers
We have been receiving more requests for recruiting videos than for other films for some time now. This is mainly due to the fact that employers are feeling pressure from potential employees that they were previously unaccustomed to. Flexibility in terms of time, reduced hours and working from home are much sought-after requirements. The world of work is currently undergoing a transformation towards modern and digitalized processes. Future employees, especially the younger generation, must therefore be made aware that they are talking to an employer who listens to their wishes, who moves with the times and does not cling to entrenched structures. And all of this must be communicated without coming across as pompous and aloof. We are the best slogans no longer work and those who fail to reach the young target group will have big problems in the future.
“What if I’m not funny?”
Our recruiting videos help potential employees to recognize in advance whether the company is the right one for them. This saves both sides from a potentially unfruitful collaboration. So if your company wants to appear serious and corporate, great! It doesn’t always have to be funny. The most important thing is that the target group knows where they are and where they are applying! This is the only way to find the right people for the job! Our goal as a film production company is to create an honest and authentic recruiting campaign that doesn’t just drone on and on, but creates long-term added value for exciting companies like Intersport, Perwein or you.
